So I have been doing more research into a stereo for my Mini. Research revealed that the speakers used in the harman kardon stereo system my car originally came with are 2 Ohm units. This is an issue for my plan of driving them off of a head unit as all the units I could find are 4 Ohm. I don’t want to blow my head unit.
So I have now moved from using just the head unit to using the preamp from a head unit along with an additional amplifier. I was thinking of using this head unit
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Along with this amplifier to match with the 2 Ohm speakers
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The mini has a 4 channel system (woofer and tweeter on 1 channel in each door and 2 more woofers in the back). Does this look like a good system to you? Any other recommendations?

Don’t lie, you can’t resist the Pioneer.

I do like the pioneer head unit. I’m more concerned about the amp.

Going from 2 ohm speakers to 4 isn’t an issue. The reverse might be though.

Driving 2 Ohm speakers with a 4 Ohm amp will damage the amp. The reduced impedance of the speaker will draw more power than the amp can provide. Hence the Clarion.

Ahh, I misread. No speaker change. Got it.

Have you measured on the wires going to the door with a multimeter to see if it really is 2 ohm? If it has front, rear and woofers you’d ideally want a 5 or 6 channel amp to power it all, or a seperate 1/2 channel for the woofers. Nice little clarion amp there tho!

The mini has a woofer and tweeter in each door which are on 1 channel and coupled together with filters. There are 2 more woofers in the back making for 4 channels. No factory subs due to lack of trunk space. I have checked the speakers which are marked as 2 ohm. I don’t think there would be enough wiring to drastically change the impedance (besides the amp is rated for 50wX4 at 4 ohm). Measuring with a multimeter wouldn’t help very much as the impedance of a speaker changes with temperature and the frequency applied (when measuring resistance the meter would apply a constant DC voltage).
